IN THE DISGUISE OF A FAKIR
(The word FAKIR is usually used to refer to either the spiritual recluse or eremite or the common street beggar who chants holy names, scriptures or verses. Also used referring to somber spiritual miracle-makers)
Hum bhesh badalke fakiroon ka
IN THE DISGUISE OF A FAKIR

Steam Engine: When I was around 9-10 years old I got a chance to drive a Steam Engine. I went to the Driver and said I would like to drive this engine and the Engine Driver obliged to my request and said Son hop in. Inside the Engine it was warm and the Fireman told me without coal and water Engine will not run, so told me to shovel some coal in the furnace. I opened the furnace door and it was very hot and red inside with fire burning and with all my strength I shoved 5-6 half filled shovels of coal into the furnace. After that the Driver made me sit on his seat and told me to pull the whistle. So I had to stand on the seat and pulled the string and there goes the whistle .. whoooooooo. After that I was told to turn a round handle/steering to the right 8-10 times so that the Engine is engaged in forward gear. Then I was told to lift the handle up. Again with all my strength I lifted the handle and the Engine started moving with Whooossss whoossshhhh Ratlling and cranking sound of the flywheel and the piston gushing the steam. My God it was like an earthquake feeling and everything shaking around you. It was all hot, steam, sweat and coal and my white shirt sprinkled with fly ash. Inside a Steam Engine every single moment is a happening of events unlike any other driving experience. Nowadays there are no Steam Engines running but I was lucky to have a once in a lifetime experience which I can never forget.
